DESCRIPTION OF ACCIDENT:\\ ^W1 ROGER D. FRANKLIN^ WAS AIRCRAFT COMMANDER OF ARMY HELICOPTER ^SN 68-157368^ ON MAY 3, 1972. HISCREW CONSISTED OF HIS PILOT ^1LT HUGH S. BODDEKER,^ CREW ENGINEER, ^SP/4 CHARLES C. MORAN,^ AND GUNNER ^SP/4 RONALD J. HUTCHINS.^ ON THE MORNING OF 3MAY 1972, ^W1 FRANKLIN^ WAS ASSIGNED TO FLY DIRECTCOMBAT SUPPORT MISSIONS FOR THE ^196TH LIGHT INF BDE.^ THE DAY WAS ROUTINE, INCLUDING AN EARLY START, 5 HRS IN THE MORNING, A BREAK FOR LUNCH AT PHU BAI, AND BACK TO THE MISSION AT APPROXIMATELY 1300HOURS. AT 1500 ^W1 FRANKLIN^ REFUELED, AND PICKEDUP SUPPLIES ENROUTE TO FIREBASE T-BONE. ON THE APPROACH INTO T-BONE THE CREW BELIEVED THEY HAD TAKEN SPORADIC SMALL ARMS FIRE. AFTER TOUCHDOWN AND THE CARGO UNLOADED ^SP/4 MORAN^ MADE A QUICK INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT AND FOUND NO DAMAGE. TWO PASSENGERS BOARDED THE AIRCRAFT. AT 1525 ^W1 FRANKLIN^ AND HIS CREW CLEARED HIS AIRCRAFT FOR DEPARTURE. AS HE PICKED THE AIRCRAFT UP TO A HOVER IT STARTED UP THEN JERKED TO THE RIGHT AND SHUDDERED. ^_W1 FRANKLIN^ ATTEMPTED A CORRECTIVE ACTION OF FULLLEFT CYLCIC AND LOWERING THE COLLECTIVE. THE AIRCRAFT STARTED TO SETTLE, THEN BROKE LOOSE, SLID APPROXIMATELY ONE FOOT TO THE RIGHT REAR AND CAUGHT AGAIN ON THE PSP. THE AIRCRAFT THEN ROLLED TO ITS RIGHT SIDE. WITH THE FIRST POINT OF CONTACT BEINGTHE MAIN ROTOR SYSTEM WHICH WAS SEVERED AT THE MAST. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST ON ITS RIGHT SIDE. AT THIS TIME ^W1 FRANKLIN^ SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN AND FOLLOWED HIS CREW AND PASSENGERS TO SAFETY. SOMEONE NOTICED A SMALL FIRE IN THE ENGINE HOT END. ^W1 FRANKLIN^ GOT THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND PUT THE FIRE OUT WITH NO FURTHER INCIDENT. THE ONLY INJURIES WERE A SPRAINED ANKLE SUSTAINED BY THE CREWCHIEF AND A BRUISED BACK SUSTAINED BY ^CPT LUELLIG.
