Accident Summary:
THE UH-1H WAS A VIP FLIGHT FROM BEARCAT TO AN LZ IN GRID YS 1096. UPON ARRIVAL AT THE LZ, IT WAS REALIZED THAT A VERTICAL DESCENT WOULD BE NEEDED TO LAND IN THE SMALL LZ. THE PILOT BROUGHT THE AIRCRAFT TO A HOVER AT TREE TOP LEVEL, APPROXIMATELY 20 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND, THEY WERE ABLE TO STABILIZE THIS HOVER AT 38 LBS. OF TORQUE. AS THE PILOT BEGAN HIS DESCENT HE STARTED HAVING DIFFICULTY KEEPING THE TAIL FROM SWINGING LEFT. AS THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER NOTICED THIS, HE SIMULTANEOUSLY BEEPED UP THE ENGINE TO THE MAXIMUM AND TOOK OVER ON THE CONTROLS. IN ORDER TO KEEP THE TAIL FROM DESCENDING INTO THE TREES HE PULLED IN ENOUGH POWER TO STOPTHE DESCENT, WHILE CIRCLING THE AIRCRAFT TO THE RIGHT. AT THIS TIME HE NOTICED HIS RPM WAS DOWN TO 6300 AND DROPPING. IN ORDER TO AVOID FALLING ON TROOPS DIRECTLY BELOW HE MAINTAINED PITCH AND SLOWED HIS FORWARD MOVEMENT, WHILE THE AIRCRAFT DESCENDED INTO HIGH BAMBOO ABOUT 40 FEET DOWNWIND FROM HIS ORIGINAL POSITION. THE MAIN ROTOR BLADES STRUCK THE BAMBOO FIRST, SEPARATING THE MAIN ROTOR HEAD AND THE TRANSMISSION FROM THE AIRCRAFT UPON IMPACT. THE AIRCRAFT MADE A RELATIVELY SOFT LANDING DUE TO THE CUSHIONING EFFECT OF THE BAMBOO, AND THE SLOW RATE OF DESCENT. THE ENGINE REMAINED RUNNING THE ENTIRE TIME, BUT WITH A REDUCTION IN POWER, UNTIL THE TRANSMISSION WAS TORN AWAY.
