Accident Summary:
ON 16 JAN 70, A UH-1H, SERIAL NUMBER 66-16759, DEPARTED THE 30TH ROK REGT. ENROUTE WITH A SLING LOAD AND TWO KOREAN PASSENGERS FOR AN LZ APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES NORTHWEST OF PHAN RANG, RVN. WINDS AT THIS TIME WERE REPORTED TO BE 20 KTS, GUSTING TO 25 KTS. THE DESTINATION WAS A RIDGE LINE CP AT 3500 FT. AT THIS TIME, THE PILOT WAS ON THE CONTROLS. WHILE ON SHORT FINAL APPROX. 200 FT. FROM SET DOWN POINT, THE AIRCRAFT ENCOUNTERED A SUDDEN DOWN DRAFT WHICH CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO HEAD INTO THE FACE OF THE MOUNTAIN. THE PILOT AND CO-PILOT ATTEMPTED TO DROP THE SLING LOAD, BUT FAILED. THE PILOT PULLED IN FULL POWER TO AVOID CRASHING AND MAINTAINED THE AIRCRAFT STRAIGHT AND LEVEL. THE AIRCRAFT HIT LEVEL AND FELL OVER LEFT ROLLING OVER UNTIL IT WAS RESTING ON ITS RIGHT SIDE. ALL PERSONS EXITED THE AIRCRAFT AND THE CREWCHIEF SUSTAINED A SPRAINED ANKLE WHILE DEPARTING THE AIRCRAFT. ONE OF THE KOREAN PASSENGERS SUSTAINED A BROKEN ARM IN THE CRASH AND THE ROLLING OVER OF THE AIRCRAFT. AFTER EXITING THE AIRCRAFT, THE CREW ASSEMBLED AND WAS FLOWN TO PHAN RANG AIR FORCE HOSPITAL FOR EXAMINATION. THE AIRCRAFT WAS ASCERTAINED TO BE UNECONOMICALLY REPAIRABLE AND NON-RECOVERABLE AND WAS DESTROYED IN PLACE TO PREVENT CAPTURE BY ENEMY FORCES.
