Accident Summary:
THE ACCIDENT OCCURED AT TRA BONG POL POINT, MRI, RVN, AT 1130 HOURS 26 AUGUST 1971. THE AIRCRAFT WAS A UH-1C GUNSHIP FULLY LOADED WITH THIRTY-EIGHT 10 POUND ROCKETS, APPROXIMATELY 1300 POUNDS OF FUEL AND 4 CREW MEMBERS. THE POL POINT IS LOCATED ON A PINNACLE SEPARATED FROM THE MAIN RUNWAY AND INCIRCLED WITH CONCERTINA WIRE, MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO USE THE RUNWAY FRO TAKE OFF. IT IS COMMON PRACTICE FOR UH-1C PILOTS TO MAKE TAKE OFFS OVER THE WIRE HEADING DOWN THE HILL TO OBTAIN AIRSPEED AND TRANSLATIONAL LIFT. ^CPT MILLS^, THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER, LIFTED THE AIRCRAFT TO A HOVER, TURNED INTO THE WIND AND COMPLETED A HOVER CHECK. HE THEN STARTED HIS TAKE OFF TO THE EAST, HE LOST RPM SLIGHTLY BUT REGAINED IT WITH AIRSPEED. ABOUT 50 METERS FROM THE CONCERTINA WIRE ^CPT MILLS^ SAW HIS AIRCRAFT WAS FLYING INTO WD-1 COMMO WIRE WHICH HAD BEN STRUNG APPROXIMATELY 12 FEET HIGH. AS THE WIRE STRUCK THE WINDSHIELD HE REACTED BY DECELERATING THE AIRCRAFT. AS A RESULT THE AIRCRAFT LOST AIRSPEED CAUSING IT TO SETTLE AND LOSE RPM. ^CPT MILLS^ MAINTAINED THE AIRCRAFT IN A STRAIGHT AND LEVEL ATTITUDE WHILE DECENDING BUT UPON TOUCH DOWN THE AIRCRAFT DID NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT RPM TO AFFORD HIM THE POSSIBILITY OF A SMOOTH TOUCH DOWN. THE HARD TOUCH DOWN CAUSED THE AMIN BLADE TO FLEX DOWNWARD AND STRIKE THE GROUND, ALSO THE LOSS OF RPM HAD CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO LOSE ANTITORQUE CONTROL. THE COMBINATION OF NO ANTI-TORQUE CONTROL AND THE BLADE STRIKE CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO TURN AND ROLL ON ITS LEFT SIDE.
