Accident Summary:
The flight started when WO1 Shirley hovered 67-17851 from the revetment area to the maintenance area for a PMP inspection. He landed the aircraft facing the maintenance hangar without incident. One of the maintenance personnel then asked him to turn the aircraft around so it could be backed into the hangar. Mr. Shirley then picked the aircraft up to a hover and proceeded to turn the aircraft to the right. In doing so, the ship got too close to the hangar causing the tail rotor to strike the underside of the roof. The tail rotor and 90 deg gearbox separated from the aircraft due to a sudden stopage and landed on the floor of the maintenance hangar. Once the tail rotor was lost the aircraft yawed to the right and started to spin in the same direction. As the helicopter yawed the main rotor struck the P.S.P. in the parking area in front of the hangar and a sudden stopage of the main rotor system resulted. This stoppage caused the aircraft to stop spinning. At this time the pilot regained control of the aircraft and corrected the yaw with left cyclic. He then executed a hovering autorotation. The aircraft landed hard and slide to a stop. Once the aircraft came to rest, the pilot immediately shut it down and exited with the rest of the crew. As a result of this accident damage was done to the tail rotor assembly, 90 deg gearbox, main rotor system, main transmission, tail boom and boom and skid assembly, as well as extensive structural damage
